Pewter cleaner. Make your own pewter cleaner

Your pewter can be clean and shiny - a collection that you can be proud of.

Use the following recipe to make a cleaner for your pewter.

  • 2 teaspoons of salt
  • 1 cup of vinegar
  • half a cup of flour - enough flour to make a thick paste.

Mix all the items together to make a thick paste. Rub this all over your pewter and then rinse it with warm soapy water for a great clean! Dry everything with a soft clean cloth.

I have a piece that was put into a dishwasher and is now water-stained (or maybe heat-damaged) and I am searching desperately for a solution as to clean it! This "paste" did not work.

salt and vinegar are GREAT for cleaning COPPER, but it doesn't work on pewter ... at least NOT on mine.

wood ash Comments By: Gail. on 2006-09-06
I was told that you make up a mixture of
something (maybe vinegar) and soft wood ash
which apparently gives pewter a great sheen.

I have a salt cellar that was only an ornament, until somebody put salt in it and now it is a mess. How do I clean it? It is on the inside

not a paste Comments By: Anon on 2009-02-18
I followed the directions using the amounts given and ended up with a bowl of vinegary water. How can 1 cup of liquid and a half cup of a dry ingredient make a thick paste? Shouldn't the amounts be reversed? I did apply the mix to my pewter and nothing happened. Still have the marks.
