Cat Litter Box. Tips for cleaning your cat litter box

Submitted by Wendy Lukowitz

What to do about cleaning up all the litter on the floor? Simply place the litter box in your bathtub. NOW the litter spillover is confined to an enclosed area.

Keep the shower curtain closed so no one even has to SEE the litter box. Afterall, doesn't it make sense to keep a kitty litter box in the bathroom where we go? Just remember to take the litter box out of the tub BEFORE you turn the water on!

NOT a good idea! Comments By: anon on 2004-11-24
So, how do you get the litter out of the tub or shower floor? You can't wash it down with water because it will gum up your pipes! Remember, litter companies don't recommend flushing litter down your toilets, as it will do the same.

Am I incorrect or no? Let me know please.

TipKing says: I think that the tip was suggesting that this a good method to prevent your cat flicking the litter all over the place. The sender does not suggest washing the litter down the drain. Yes you are now faced with the issue of cleaning the litter from the bath but this will be easier than all over your floor or carpets.

I do this, in an upstairs bathroom that we dont use much. I have a throw rug lining the bottom of the tub, then the litter box on top of that. I vacuum out the excess litter that gets tracked out of the box. Also, the dogs cant get to the litter box.

Containing cat litter Comments By: Cynthia on 2007-04-28
Keep cat litter off your floor by using an appliance overflow tray to contain it. These large, shallow trays are designed to sit under a washing machine to catch the overflow if the machine leaks, and can be bought at an appliance or home improvement store. Place your cat litter box in the appliance tray, with a piece of carpeting or a turf-look door mat as a 'walk-off mat' to clean kitty's paws when exiting the box. The tray is large enough to catch litter kicked out of the box, and deep enough to contain the loose litter, yet shallow enough to be relatively unobtrusive. This system works best with an enclosed-style litter box, which can be placed with the back against an edge of the tray, leaving plenty of room in front for the walk-off mat.
