  1. Cut up an apple into thin slices, place on buttered bread. Sprinkle with grated cheese and salted peanuts then grill (broil) until bubbling hot.

  2. If you use tinned salmon in sandwiches you can make it go further by adding some grated carrot.

  3. A quick, easy and nourishing snack is to melt a little butter on an enamel plate, remove from the heat and break an a egg onto it, add a little salt and toss the egg then cook gently over a moderate heat.

  4. Cook button mushrooms in butter and cream and heap onto toast for a quick snack. To make it even more tasty you can add some Parsley or chives.

  5. Using a slice of toast, butter it and place a pineapple ring on the top. Fill the center of the pineapple ring with some grated cheese and grill for a few minutes.

  13. Using a large sliced onion fry it until tender, then add to a can of beans in an ovenproof dish. Cover with layers of grated cheese, mashed potato and more cheese. Bake in a moderate oven for 15min.

  14. Cinnamon toast is delightful and easy to make. Simply mix 1tsp (5g) of cinnamon to a heaped tablespoonful (30g) sugar. Shake onto ordinary toast and keep warm in the oven until ready to use.

  15. You can make your own savory croquettes using left over potato. Simply add finely chopped onion, tomato, parsley and grated cheese. Mix well, form croquettes, roll in flour then fry.

  16. Here is a new way to serve new potatoes � Remove the skin (they just need rubbing), wash and boil in salted water. Drain and add chopped spring onion, 2oz (60g) butter and a heaped teaspoon (5g) of rolled oats. Toss all together in the pan.

  17. Make a quick, cold sweet by spreading jam, syrup, stewed apples or sliced banana over the bottom of a flan case. Cover with thick custard and sprinkle with fine coconut.

  18. Toast a slice of bread on one side. On the other side a spread sliced banana thinly, sprinkle with brown sugar and put under the grill.
