Oven Cleaner

Many are based on caustic soda (sodium hydroxide), which is extremely poisonous and corrosive. Non-caustic cream cleaners contain other harmful chemicals, such as strong alkalis, which can cause skin complaints.

Alternative

If you haven't got an oven with a self-cleaning lining, roast meat at lower temperatures which won't make the fat splash or spit. Cover the food with a lid or foil. Wipe the oven while it is still warm with a damp cloth to prevent a build-up of grease. If it gets dirty, sprinkle bicarbonate of soda around the oven while it is still warm. Leave for an hour, then wipe clean.

when using bicarb to clean oven. Comments By: Ruth on 2007-03-16
I had tried bicarb many times and not with much sucess but the trick is this. Sprinkle the bicarb then spray with water till damp. Put the oven on to warm and let the bicarb bake on then use a stiff brush like an old dish brush and scrub off. I never use oven cleaner now and I also line my oven with foil.
