Brushing teeth with bar soap, tastes bad but works well...

Submitted by Shannon

I read online that if you can bear the bad flavor, brushing your teeth with a regular unscented bar soap can kill all germs and remove all plaque and tartar that ordinary tooth paste cannot remove.

It is also supposed to help your teeth to remineralize because they have no residue on them, supposedly tooth paste has tons of glycerin in it ,which sticks to your teeth even if you rinse vigorously after you brush.
Also tooth paste contains fluoride which is supposedly toxic if used in large quantities.

I've tried it for two weeks now (bar soap) ,and I must day my gums are so much healthier looking and my teeth are cleaner and whiter (like 3 shades already).

I went to the dentist two days ago for my yearly cleaning, and I had no plaque! He was impressed at how clean my teeth were.

I have even gotten to where I do not really taste the soap, I think it is because I chose to use DOVE bar soap ...
I just wet my brush and rub it on the soap a few times and brush I try to avoid getting the soap on my tongue, so i do not taste it.

My sister and my sister's husband are also doing this now, and they agree it works really well.

I recommend to anyone who is not closed minded and is willing to research the matter before they pass judgment.

If you go on yahoo type "soap as tooth paste" and you will see all the many articles that come up, so you can decide if this is for you, yourself.

If you like the idea but cannot stand the bad taste, there are flavored tooth soaps available online in flavors like spearmint and cinnamon, They are about 20 bucks but supposedly last an entire year for most people.

I also read that if you take lots of vitamin c and calcium that is also supposed to help your teeth and gums.To stay healthy.

Soap memories! Comments By: Gina-Nicole Smith on 2008-09-29
I am so surprised and how nice my mouth feels. I use Ivory bar soap (just like mom did) but since I don't have to swallow it, it wasn't bad at all. I feel very clean and I will never go back to tooth paste again!

Use natural coconut or olive oil soap Comments By: anon on 2008-10-18
I have been brushing my teeth with soap for years and find that my teeth and mouth always feels cleaner than with toothpaste. You get used to the taste after awhile. I use soap from Bella Terra Products on Etsy. They have pure natural coconut soap and olive oil soap. It works great for teeth!

Antifreeze works well and tastes better than ivory Comments By: Job on 2008-11-01
I can't stand swallowing soap juice either. Antifreeze and soap are poison fools

Natural Soap and Detergent bars are dangerously different! Comments By: Jayne on 2008-11-02
I'm a natural soap maker and i'm alarmed that you could put a toxic chemical detergent bar in your mouth in preference to a toxic chemical toothpaste. REAL SOAP is not detergent or cancer causing (unlike petro-chemical detergent bar) however ALL real soap contains naturally retained glycerin as a by product of saponification and will not be listed as an added ingredient. The amount contained will be small though. Real soap can be enhanced with the therapeutic properties of essential oils and would be of benefit to oral health. Liquid vs. Solid? Both the same as long as they are REAL SOAP. Just a different alkaline used in the process to produce a softer soap. PLEASE DON'T USE DETERGENT...However i am gonna try real soap tho and may well make one specially for teeth =D

Use Cal Ben 5 star soap Comments By: Roderick Jones on 2008-11-14
In my humble opinon one of the purest soaps available is from an American company called Cal Ben 5 star soap. The man that runs it started the company with his father in the late 1940's after leaving the US army. He worked with the CHEMICAL WEAPONS division. When he tells you that most soaps and detergents are posionous to the body and these chemicals are a by product of chemical weapon research and the chemical industry he knows what he's talking about. The web site even advises the use of their soaps for teeth as there only ingrediants their bar soap contains are white vegitable tallow (?) and coconut oils. What more can you ask for?

Regards
Roderick from England.

Soap has glycerin too, though. Comments By: Yancy on 2008-11-24
But you're forgetting that soap has glycerin in it, too. It's a byproduct of the chemical process and it's really obvious if you've ever made your own soap at home.

rinsing soap out of mouth Comments By: oldbiker1 on 2008-11-30
this is one of those "secrets" that the dentists and the ADA don't tell you about -- much better than toothpaste. But, how to get soap residue out of your mouth? Rinse out with apple cider vinegar (dilute with a little water)-- vinegar neutralizes the soap -- then your mouth is super clean.

Look at ingredients Comments By: ads on 2008-12-14
It should just be saponized(sp?) oil or fat, and salt
Don't use commercial soaps like dove or irish spring - bad idea.
I use kiss my face olive oil soap.
you can find it in most stores.

Read Soap Ingredients Before You Brush! Comments By: Anon on 2009-01-01
If you are going to make the switch to brushing with soap or have recently started, please DO NOT brush with Dove, Zest or any commercial bar soaps or any kind of liquid soap! Nearly all of these soaps contain harsh chemicals and detergents that are as bad or worse as brushing your teeth with regular toothpaste. If you shouldn't use it on your teeth, you shouldn't use it on your skin either (I can't recommend buying handmade soaps enough!).

Read soap ingredients carefully. Choose a soap that has saponified oils in it (a good quality olive oil soap will work) but it's also important for the health of your teeth that the soap has some essential oils to not only help with the taste, but also aid in the re-enamelization process and certain oils also help draw out toxins from your gums and protect against bacteria.

There are a handful of sellers on Etsy.com that make handmade tooth soap for very reasonable prices compared to other options you will find online.

Also, be wary if you are using or were thinking about switching to Dr. Bronner's soap. I am almost out of my current tooth soap (purchased from BeautifulSoaps on Etsy) and was considering switching to Dr. Bronners but after reading the ingredients decided against it. The one ingredient that kept me from choosing that soap was citric acid, which they use as a preservative. But from having read Dr. Gerard Judd's book Good Teeth, Birth to Death - I am aware that acid is what decays the teeth and causes cavities not sugar. Even though I would be rinsing after brushing, I would rather not brush with an acid when there are other alternatives out there.

Good luck on your quest for a great tooth soap and enjoy the squeaky clean feeling that you won't get with any toothpaste!
